Dr Paul Butler

Biography
Paul is a materials science specialist with interests in nanotechnology, biomimetics, smart materials and smart packaging. He spent the first half of his career in academia, with positions at the University of California and the Department of Materials at Imperial College, London. He then joined Alcan Aluminium at their R&D facilities in Banbury, UK and became R&D Director of Alcan's Canadian laboratories in Kingston, Ontario. He returned to the UK to take up a position as Director of Materials & Packaging Technologies with what was then CarnaudMetalbox, which then became part of Crown Cork & Seal, a world leader in the manufacture and development of rigid metal and plastic packaging for the food, beverage, personal care, industrial and household markets. He is currently an academic visitor in the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford and consults on smart materials and smart consumer packaging. Paul has a PhD and DSc from the University of Leeds, where he graduated in Metallurgy. He is an associate of IDTechEx Ltd, a Cambridge UK-based organisation providing consultancy in smart labels, smart packaging and RFID. He has written two books on smart packaging - "Smart Packaging" and "Consumer Smart Packaging" available from www.idtechex.com.
