Presentation Summary

Tube Lines is upgrading and maintaining the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines on the London Underground, the world's oldest metro system. Our lines suffered from decades of underinvestment until we took them over in 2003 so we are effectively challenged with bringing them from the 19th Century into the 21st.
As well as extensive heavy work on the network, eg track replacement, key benefits can be brought from modernising the way maintenance and other work is done and this is a priority for Tube Lines. This involves introducing many new technologies to the Tube, eg RFID, handhelds, GPS, GIS, etc. We made a good start with this but realised systems were becoming too sophisticated, which meant the technologies weren't working as well as they might for us and for passengers.
Consequently we are reviewing our processes and systems to simplify them. Additional planning is taking place and we are revising our approach to training.
We are still working towards realising the same substantial benefits which will help us realise our vision of delivering an outstanding Tube for London.

Speaker Biography (Jason Black)

Jason Black is a programme manager at Tube Lines who is involved with managing significant changes in culture, process and technologies within Tube Lines. Prior to joining Tube Lines he was Head of Change at financial services company Aviva, which followed a wider career managing programmes in the sector.

Since 2003 Tube Lines has been maintaining and upgrading the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines under a 30-year contract with London Underground. It is responsible for 320km of track, 255 trains, 101 stations, 2,395 bridges and structures, 227 escalators and 71 lifts. Over 600 million passengers a year use our lines. Innovation is fundamental to the way Tube Lines works. The company's employees constantly look for new, better ways to manage the three lines by inventing new tools, streamlining processes and helping our employees develop so taht they can achieve more. Working here is challenging and demanding yet enriching.
