Speaker Biography

Hans-Erik Nilsson finished his PhD in Solid State Electronics in 1997 at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. The same year he got a senior research position at the Mid-Sweden University focusing on modeling of advanced semiconductor devices. In 2002 he became a full professor in electronics design and the Head of the Electronics Design Division. His research interests include quantum transport in electron devices, radiation imaging detectors, and RF electron devices, printed RFID antennas, printed sensor technology and wireless sensor networks. In 2004 he and his coworkers started the spin-off company Sensible Solutions Sweden, which is active in the area of printed RFID sensor solutions.

Company Profile

The Mid-Sweden University is located in the central forest industry region of Sweden. The electronics design research during the last few years has been focusing on wireless sensor networks and RFID sensor solutions for industrial applications. Recently the RFID research group suggested and started the development of a concept called Action Activated Tags (AAT). The AAT concept was designed for the capture and logging of single events in healthcare and smart packaging applications. The AAT concept utilizes a printed sensor cell that generates energy when wet. The energy is used to power up a silicon readout solution which is either an active or passive RFID solution. Special attention was paid to the manufacturability and cost related issues, as the cost for the solution should be ultra-low (of the order of 1-5 cents per tag). Several new product designs based on the AAT have been designed and in 2004 a spin-off company Sensible Solution Sweden AB was started (www.sensiblesolutions.se). Sensible Solution owns the patent of the invented AAT concept and is currently developing production capabilities in cooperation with a safety alarm providers. The current research direction is targeting the integration of printed sensors, memories and antennas in active and passive RFID systems.
