Presentation Summary

In the last 12 months, very rapid progress has been made in the development of commercially viable Light Emitting Polymer (LEP) materials for display and lighting applications. This presentation will focus on:
  • Degradation studies that have led to the design of new and improved materials
  • Recent lifetime and efficiency results for R,G,B, and W polymers
  • Challenges of formulating inks that can be used in a production environment
  • Importance of device design

Speaker Biography (Natasha Conway)

Graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1995 with a joint honours degree in Physics and Electronic Engineering and then undertook a PhD at Cambridge University on diamond-like amorphous carbon for thin film transistors. Moved into the OLED field in July 2000, initially working for Opsys Ltd in Oxford, UK and subsequently for CDT after CDT's acquisition of Opsys in December 2002. Has been part of the Sumation joint venture formed between CDT and Sumitomo since its inception in Nov 2005. Currently leading the blue project team, focusing on both materials and device development to improve blue p-OLED performance.

As the benefits of P-OLED technology become ever clearer, display makers need access both to the latest materials for evaluation and development, and to sustainable high quality material supplies for ramp up to commercial production. Sumation®, a joint venture combining physical and intellectual assets of CDT and Sumitomo Chemical, was formed in 2005 with the sole purpose of designing, developing, manufacturing and selling Light Emitting Polymers (LEPs) and inks for display, lighting and related electronic applications. Sumation is headquartered in Tokyo and has R&D facilities based both in Tsukuba, Japan and in Cambridge, UK. R&D activities are focused on developing solution-processable fluorescent and phosphorescent materials for commercial use in numerous applications, including lighting. Manufacturing and ink formulation takes place in specialised facilities located in Osaka, Japan.
