Speaker Biography (Donald Bender)

Donald Bender, Chief Technology Officer CTO of AFS Trinity Power Corporation , heads the Livermore technology & Engineering Group developing and perfecting the XH drive-train, including advanced hybrid system architecture & Fast Energy Storage systems that employ ultracapacitors and/or high speed flywheels. Mr. Bender also leads flywheel technology development encompassing high-speed composite rotors, ultra high power, compact permanent magnet motor/generators, magnetic bearings, and compact power & control systems. Prior to joining AFST Bender was Group Leader at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, (LLNL), where he worked closely with Dr. Richard Post. He also spent twelve years in the Laser Program at LLNL, including the use of laser photo-ionization to enrich uranium at plant scale, and was responsible for numerous special projects developing advanced opto-mechanical components and high-speed bearings. Bender holds four US patents, two applications, and authored or co-authored five new provisional patent applications for the Extreme Hybrid' drive train in 2005. Mr. Bender received BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
