Speaker Biography

Armin Reller is Professor on the chair of Solid State Chemistry at the Institute of Physics, Chairman of the Environmental Science Center (ESC) and member of the board of the AMU (Application Center for Materials and Science) of the University of Augsburg, Germany. His research focuses on synthesis and properties of functional materials relevant for energy and environment technologies. Specific attention is payed to ecologic and socio economic impacts of exploring and applying strategic resources. He received his education and Ph.D in Solid State Chemistry at the University of Zürich, Switzerland. He has been post doc on the Department of Physical Chemistry at Cambridge University in England, completed a research stay at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and worked as Research Associate on the Anorganic-Chemical Institute of the University of Zürich. From 1992-1998 he has been Professor on the Institute of Anorganic und Applied Chemistry at the University of Hamburg; beside since 1995 leader of the Programme Solar Chemistry/Hydrogen/Regenerative Carriers of Energy at the Bundesamt für Energie (BFE, Bern). He had published more than 200 publications and he is member of the editorial board and publisher of two journals: Progress in Solid State Chemistry (Elsevier) and Ökologische Perspektiven in Natur-, Geistes- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften „GAIA" (ökom-Verlag). He is a member of the Scientific-Technical Advisor-Committee of the Science Center of Geesthacht, Germany, of the Advisor-Committee of AG SOLAR, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany and member of the Scientific Group of the Department of Energy Engineering, PSI, Würenlingen, Switzerland.

Company Profile

Research activities are focussed on the development of novel functional materials exhibiting potential applications in emerging or established technologies. Owing to the fact that metals play an essential role for tailoring and designing the properties and functionality of novel materials, extended studies have been initiated in order to identify availability or scarcity of strategic metals along the complete supply chain. Together with industrial partners resource policies respecting socio-economic, geographic, geo-political and ecological factors are developed.
