Presentation Summary

  • As RFID and sensor technology are more widely used, objects and goods are getting more and more "intelligent", knowing who they are, who owns them, and where they need to go in the supply chain
  • These intelligent goods are driving a trend of "distributed, bottom-up intelligence", which is opposed to the current "top-down" centralized IT systems, illustrated by the central ERP systems in many organisations
  • In the future, the flow of goods in the supply chain will start to look more like the way that data is moving through the Internet: highly flexible and efficient, but with little or no central coordination
  • A case study from a European airline illustrates how this company is starting to adopt its IT architecture, and prepare for this development
