Presentation Summary

  • An explosion of newly available genetic information is providing us with the tools we need to target sensors specifically to harmful bacteria and viruses (pathogens)
  • New sensors types are needed that provide sensitive and selective pathogen identification, without user intervention
  • We have used immobilized molecular beacons to detect a type of bacteria responsible for a large proportion of hospital-acquired infections
  • With further development, sensors of this type may be suitable for incorporation into a variety of consumer goods, including packaging
