An explosion of newly available genetic information is providing us with the tools we need to target sensors specifically to harmful bacteria and viruses (pathogens)
New sensors types are needed that provide sensitive and selective pathogen identification, without user intervention
We have used immobilized molecular beacons to detect a type of bacteria responsible for a large proportion of hospital-acquired infections
With further development, sensors of this type may be suitable for incorporation into a variety of consumer goods, including packaging
