Sensor based battery-less RFID tags: new technologies and new applications

 

A career in electronics started with Inmos Ltd., (1981) as a failure analysis technician. He holds a BSc Combined Honours Degree in Physics and Electronics (Sheffield 1988) and an MSc in Advanced Microelectronic Design (Durham 1989). In 1999 he was awarded a PhD in "The Design and Use of a Digital Radio Telemetry System for Measuring Internal Combustion Engine Piston Parameters". An accomplished embedded systems engineer, he holds a number of patents. In 2001, Greg Founded Instrumentel Ltd., a Leeds University spin-out developing tele-sensing and tele-actuating systems for extreme, hazardous and difficult-to-access places.

Instrumentel Ltd is a 'spin-out' company from the University of Leeds to bring to market its groundbreaking research in battery-less telemetry systems for remote actuation and the taking of remote sensor measurements in normal to harsh environments.

 

Instrumentel initially applied its sensing technology, called IntraSense™, to condition monitoring of F1 racing car engines, but has since added actuation capability to create a remote locking technology called IntraLoc™. This new locking system provides a high level of security to containers by means of a novel, battery-less electronic lock and coded electronic key. Its unique selling point is that the "smart" container locks will only open or close within a designated area by a trained individual using a coded scanner. The system is designed for the supply chain industry and provides point-to-point asset tracking, as well as ensuring the accountability of all those involved in the supply chain process.

 

The IntraSense™ technology is ahead of normal RFID technology, while the IntraLoc™ technology is unique in the market place with no known competitors other than those that provide anti-tamper packaging in various forms. IntraLoc™ takes security to a much higher level than this.
