Presentation Summary

  • Solar Islands describes a new concept for the conversion of solar energy to usable energy (e.g. electricity or hydrogen) by means of a new way to construct large size islands which can align to the sun by simply turning to the right azimuth.
  • The concept describes such systems floating in the sea, and others built on land.
  • Solar Island can be used for CSP, but also to concentrate solar irradiation on PV panels, at a concentration between 5 and 20 suns. This opens up possibilities for large scale photovoltaic systems at extremely competitive costs.

Company Profile (CSEM Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique SA)

CSEM provides wireless sensor network technology optimised for energy autonomy and for ease of deployment. Through hardware/software co-design CSEM's WiseNET technology achieves autonomy of 30 times more than standard systems. WiseMAC is a self-configuring, self-healing mesh networking protocol optimised for ad hoc WSN networks. Icycom is an ultra low power WSN node on a chip, with 1V/2mA operation compatible with energy harvesting. Applications include agriculture, civil engineering and environmental monitoring. At IDTechEx CSEM will be demonstrating an agricultural application using an energy harvesting source.
