Presentation Summary

Ultra-wide band (UWB) has been used by the US military for over two decades. Now this same wireless technology is available to healthcare institutions in the US and medical device manufacturers. UWB promises to radically change the way hospitals conduct the delivery of patient care. This presentation provides insight into how Washington Hospital Center installed real-time location systems throughout the emergency department using UWB RFID tags to track the status and exact location of patients, staff and essential equipment. Topics addressed include:
  • Future designs on automating routine processes
  • Improve patient & staff safety
  • Reduce in-patient stays and capital expenditures
  • Manage hospital assets
  • Increase hospital security
  • Reduce and eliminate nosocomial infections
  • Protect patient information and stream patient care
  • Design a concept of Hospital Grade Wireless (HGW)
  • Describe the data and voice communications capabilities of UWB as an attractive wireless alternative for use in today's HIPAA environment
