Printed, Flexible and Organic Electronics

Printed, Flexible and Organic Electronics

Printed Electronics, being thin film silicon or inorganic or organic semiconductors, can be used to form Thin Film Transistor Circuits (TFTCs), such as replacing the functionality of simple silicon chips. TFTCs also employ thin film conductors and dielectrics and the ultimate objective is to make many different components at the same time - such as displays, batteries, sensors, microphones etc using the same materials or at least the same deposition techniques thus saving cost and improving reliability. Some TFTCs will be capable of covering large areas to affordably form electronic billboards, smart shelves and so on. They will be lightweight, rugged and mechanically flexible. Often they will be made by rapid, high-volume reel-to-reel processing even forming a part of regular printing processes for graphics. These circuits will be cheap enough to permit electronics where envisaged silicon chips are always or almost always too expensive, where multiple components and needed, and where silicon is impracticle (e.g. not flexible, brittle, thick etc).

Smart Devices Require Smarts

Medicine has relied on mechanical devices to help treat patients for decades. These devices have ranged in complexity from stents and shunts to dialysis machines and ventilators. As we settle into this age of data, the pressure to connect, control, instrument and analyze the operation of such devices and their impact on health has grown exponentially. After all, at a time when my watch can share heart rate and oxygen saturation, surely any physician-prescribed monitoring device should be able to provide relevant medical insight too?

In-Mold Electronics: Multiple Players, Diverging Strategies

How do we communicate with our electronic devices? There are many different 'human-machine interfaces (HMI)' options, ranging from the well-established (keyboard/mouse/mechanical switches) to somewhat more recent developments such as the capacitive touch screens found on smartphones. As greater numbers of devices around us gain 'smart' functionality, the ability to incorporate HMI components elegantly and cost-effectively is increasingly important.

Modular Facade Supplies Buildings with Renewable Energy

The rate of renovation in the building sector is still too low to achieve the energy transition by the target date set by the German federal government. However, increased use of prefabricated components can help accelerate this process. Researchers are developing a facade module that integrates the technical building equipment and supplies it with renewable energy to heat, cool and ventilate the adjoining rooms.
