Alternative gaseous and liquid fuels are likely to be needed to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as heating, shipping or aviation, with two main routes existing to produce sustainable alternative fuels: biofuels and electro-fuels (e-fuels). Biofuels are already widely used, though most stem from food crops, limiting the environmental benefit. More advanced feedstocks, such as cellulosic or waste materials, are being explored but concerns remain over the total availability of feedstock and true environmental benefit. E-fuels offer an alternative to biofuels by combining H2, from water electrolysis with a carbon source, such as from direct air carbon capture, to produce drop-in fuels. However, they are still at an early stage of development with various routes that can be used for production, creating uncertainty in how the market will develop.
