nOCD In this profile Alexis Karandrea interviews Stephen Smith, the Founder and CEO of nOCD, a company that provides a mobile app for the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder. History An OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) patient himself, Stephen Smith, the CEO and Founder of nOCD, revealed he has experienced first-hand the difficultly in receiving the right diagnosis and the multifaceted challenges of finding the appropriate therapy. The latter, is a three-pronged problem: First, OCD therapy is traditionally cost-prohibitive and more often than not, paid for out-of-pocket by the patient. If the provider is out-of-network, this means a patient can be paying up to $200 per visit. Secondly, OCD treatment is not always accessible, and people have reported taking as many as 17 years to find the right provider. Additionally, there is a 2-year waiting period to see a top specialist in this area. Last, the therapy itself is often a hurdle for patients. Treating OCD is often done through a process called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, more specifically, Exposure Response Prevention (ERP). The therapy is intended to purposefully and gradually make the patient experience those things that make them anxious or uncomfortable so that the eventually learn not to give in to their compulsive behavior. While practitioners can work through this process with patients in the office, it becomes a challenge once they leave and return back to their daily life. Stephen Smith, along with other co-developers, have worked to solve these three central problems by creating the nOCD app. With 7000 active users in 50 countries as of July 2017, nOCD is aiming to be the largest digital mental health platform by 2018. nOCD
