In this presentation we show how higher reliability, shorter charging times and early fault detection can be achieved with the use of smart instrumented Li-ion cells, enabling significant advances in the battery technology.
We find that the cell core temperature is consistently and significantly higher than the surface temperature, and reveal a breach of safety limits during a rapid discharge test. We show how to use such data for cell optimisation and thermal-profiles construction for further analysis. Finally we demonstrate how an efficient power mapping enabled with our technology led to a five-fold decrease in charging time of a commercial automotive grade Li-ion cell, without compromising the cell's thermal stability.
