Follow Principal Technology Analyst James Hayward through a day at IDTechEx
I joined in late 2014 straight from an MSci in Chemistry from Imperial College London. My journey has taken me through several diverse and interesting topic areas, some with relevance to previous study, but mostly completely separate.Download - Average Day of an IDTechEx Analyst (PDF)
Within six weeks I was giving a short presentation on the part of a new topic I was learning at an IDTechEx conference in Silicon Valley. Before 6 months I had the opportunity to work closely on a large project with a large global chemicals company, for which I was supported throughout by the senior team but had the opportunity to deliver myself. A year after that first conference, I was working closely with the events team to curate the agenda for the event, including delivering the keynote and building relationships with speakers, exhibitors and attendees alike.
By 18 months I took on more responsibility overseeing and managing IDTechEx's subscription platform, meaning working between the analyst, sales and IT teams, as well as with customers, to grow this key product for the company. This kind of journey is not unusual for an analyst; the team is encouraged to develop different skills in different areas, and given the means via training and the trust from the senior teams to do so. It's been a very enjoyable and productive way to spend five years at the start of my career.James Hayward
