Beat-to-beat, non-invasive, wearable blood pressure monitoring

Natalie Fifield
David Pearce and Steve Schaefer discuss ViCardio, the new beat-to-beat, non-invasive, wearable blood pressure monitor with Principal Analyst James Hayward at the IDTechEx Show in Santa Clara, CA. Steve and David come from varied backgrounds (Steve as an engineer and then lawyer, David as a general practitioner and then investor), but both are now central to the team behind the new product: ViCardio.

The journey beyond the traditional oscillometric cuff for blood pressure monitoring has lasted around 50 years. Beat-to-beat blood pressure monitoring, conducted in a non-invasive, accurate and comfortable way has not been possible to date. ViCardio, and their parent company, Tarilian Laser Technologies, have developed an optical system for measuring beat-to-beat blood pressure at the wrist.

Having recently completed a clinical trial at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, the team are now moving to application for their CE Mark and subsequently approval with the FDA. Targeting a full launch in 2019, ViCardio aim to revolutionise the landscape for at home blood pressure testing, both directly to patients with hypertension through to options within the clinical environment.

ViCardio first demonstrated the technology at the IDTechEx Show in Berlin in 2018, and later joined IDTechEx for the USA event in Santa Clara later in the year. They represent one of the many exciting companies demonstrating new and innovative products based on emerging technologies.
