Renewables Increasingly Beat Even Cheapest Coal Competitors on Cost
Renewable power is increasingly cheaper than any new electricity capacity based on fossil fuels. Renewable Power Generation Costs in 2019 shows that more than half of the renewable capacity added in 2019 achieved lower power costs than the cheapest new coal plants.

Hydropower Plants to Support Solar and Wind Energy in West Africa
Hydropower plants can support solar and wind power, rather unpredictable by nature, in a climate-friendly manner. A new study in the scientific journal Nature Sustainability has now mapped the potential for such "solar-wind-water" strategies for West Africa: an important region where the power sector is still under development, and where generation capacity and power grids will be greatly expanded in the coming years.

Renewables Account for Almost Three Quarters of New Capacity in 2019
IRENA's annual Renewable Capacity Statistics 2020 shows that renewables expanded by 7.6 per cent last year with Asia dominating growth and accounting for 54 per cent of total additions. While expansion of renewables slowed last year, total renewable power growth outpaced fossil fuel growth by a factor of 2.6, continuing the dominance of renewables in power expansion first established in 2012. Solar and wind contributed 90 per cent of total renewable capacity added in 2019.

Francesco La Camera appointed as new IRENA Director-General
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly selected Francesco La Camera to be the next Director-General of IRENA. The appointment took place during the 9th Assembly of IRENA, the ultimate decision-making body of the agency. Mr. La Camera will take office on 4 April 2019, succeeding Adnan Z. Amin, who has been IRENA Director-General since 2011.

Batwind - the world's first battery for offshore wind
With Batwind in operation, it will for the first time be possible to store energy produced from an offshore wind farm. Electricity produced at the world's first floating offshore wind farm Hywind Scotland, located 25 kilometers off the coast of Peterhead, will be transported via cables to an onshore substation where the 1 MW batteries are placed and connected to the grid.
