The iPack Center is a VINNOVA Centre of Excellence established at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) in Stockholm, funded over a ten-year period (2007-2016) by VINNOVA, KTH and partners from industry.
The center is a multi-disciplinary research platform and meeting place that establishes collaborations between Swedish forest products industry, electronic industry, in area of intelligent packaging and hybrid media.
The center develops core technologies for heterogeneous integration of bio-medical sensors, energy supplies, computing and wireless communications on fiber-based packaging and paper-boards, for innovative products such as smart bio-paper, intelligent pharmaceutical packaging and storage, intelligent patient monitoring devices.
The center coordinates around 10 multi-disciplinary research groups within KTH and the reserach institute - Innventia, and over almost 20 Swedish companies including paper and package companies (StoraEnso, Billerud, Korsnas etc), RFID and printed intelligence (e.g. Xaar) and electronic and system companies (NOTE, Imsys and Catena etc). Public actor in this center is VINNOVA. The research explores multi-disciplinary innovations encompassing self-powered ultra-low cost RFID, paper-based bio-medical sensors, printed energy cells and interactive paper functions, low cost manufacturing and integration technologies as well as manufacturability aspects.
