EV Power Electronics: Examining Market and Technology Developments from 2025 Onwards

In 2025, global battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales have slowed down more than expected. However, developments in powertrain technology, such as the batteries, motors, and power electronics, have continued to raise the bar in energy density, power density, and reliability. Power electronics in particular has seen a lot of movement.

SiC MOSFETs are being deployed in more and more EV models, and cost reductions raise the feasibility of its use in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), when it was previously only considered to be a good choice for BEVs. Chinese suppliers of SiC MOSFETs have strengthened the supply chain of its domestic OEMs. SiC MOSFETs will remain a key role in global electrification.

Meanwhile, for GaN, the race is still on to deploy high-voltage GaN in electric vehicles. With the first announced deployment of GaN for the onboard charger to be in 2026, we are seeing the first market movements. Automotive GaN devices are being qualified by major companies such as Infineon, charting the course from niche to the mainstream.

In this webinar, IDTechEx will summarize the current market landscape concerning the wide bandgap semiconductors SiC and GaN and other EV power electronics market trends, drawing on research from the new IDTechEx report "Power Electronics for Electric Vehicles 2026-2036: Technologies, Markets, and Forecasts".

The webinar encompasses the following highlights:
• High-level overview of EV power electronics, and the properties of Si, SiC, and GaN
• Analysis of SiC MOSFET adoption, 800V architectures, and supply chain developments
• Analysis of GaN's potential in EVs, and developing technologies
• An examination of other trends in EV power electronics
• An overview of the market analysis and evolution of power electronics in EVs up to 2036
