Smart Packaging: Emerging Drivers and Technologies

Smart packaging describes the integration of sensors, indicators, and wireless communication into packaging to enhance user engagement, product quality, convenience, and efficiency. The extremely large addressable market, covering everything from cardboard delivery boxes to the luxurious packaging of spirits and perfumes, makes smart packaging a compelling commercial opportunity.
Existing successes include RFID tags and QR codes, both of which are widely adopted. More sophisticated smart packaging comprising sensors and/or location tracking is generally at an earlier stage, particularly at item-level; finding a use case and business model that justifies the additional packaging cost is essential. Promising applications gaining traction include monitoring prescription compliance via electronic blister packs, embedding lighting in publicly displayed packaging of high value items such as spirits, and tracking 'reusable transport infrastructure' such as crates.
