Biometric Identification

In our social interactions of daily life, our face, voice, and behavioural traits establish our identity. In contrast, a computer's ability to identify its users is still largely limited to passwords or tokens. Passports, tokens and tickets are "something I have"; passwords and PINs are "something I know".

However, as the cloud connects our world and makes data sharing more easily, unique, more secure, and more convenient identification and verification methods are required. The concepts of "something I have" and "something I know" are therefore gradually being replaced or supplemented with "something of me" - the biometrics.

Thanks to the wide deployment of smart phones, tablets, PCs and wearable devices, biometric identification technologies are the next trends for device players to make a difference. Primary sensing technologies being developed and applied include fingerprint sensing, voice biometric recognition, face recognition and iris recognition.

Fingerprint sensors have become the standard components of smart phones, with capacitive fingerprint sensors dominating in consumer electronics. Other technologies such as optical, thermal and ultrasonic also attracted tremendous attention. Recently there are also trends of under-glass solutions as well as liveness detection.

In consumer electronics, fingerprint sensors do not work alone, but usually with face recognition, voice recognition, and iris recognition. Other emerging technologies are also being researched and developed, expanding biometrics in applications beyond consumer electronics.

The demand for improved biometric identification also speeds up the development of relevant technologies and deployment, such as sensor technologies and AI. This master class will focus on the next big thing in biometrics field, covering maturing technologies, popular algorithms, systems, markets and players, as well as emerging technologies.

At the end of the master class, you will have a good understanding about how these methods work, who the important players are, latest innovations, technology improvement, the maturity and market status.

For those attending.
