Electronic devices have traditionally been exclusively rigid, but this is changing. Over the last few decades, material and component companies have increasingly experimented with new form factors for electronic materials and products, offering increasingly mature offerings to the marketplace. In the last few years, some of these products have reached a critical maturity that has allowed them to start to gain market traction and achieve growth. This forum will study this change in form factor behind electronics, moving from rigid, through flexible, to stretchable and conformal.
The introduction of stretchability to electronic systems is extremely diverse. This forum will focus on several key themes around this development of new form factors and will discuss their individual development, progress and technology themes. These include areas such as the development of stretchable conductive inks, transparent conductive films, and the integration of new materials into these and similar systems to achieve stretchability. It will also look at how stretchable electronics has become central within the emerging world of electronic textiles; bringing the soft conformal form factors from textiles alongside electronic functionality. Finally, it will also look at areas such as in-mold electronics (IME). Here the final component may not be stretchable, but the stretchability is incorporated in the manufacturing process, and therefore must be taken into account for any materials used.
This range of materials and products corresponds to an even more diverse group of target markets and potential applications. However, with the majority remaining in relative infancy, there are many questions that remain about the potential for the introduction of new stretchable components in each case. This forum will address these questions, providing different case studies around companies that are involved in this space.
This forum will be delivered by IDTechEx analysts who have conducted the underlying research into stretchable and conformal electronics, as well as related areas such as conductive inks, electronic textiles, in-mold electronics, electronic skin patches, printed and flexible electronics. This research is based on interviews with key players, extensive travel for global conferences and events, as well as visiting prominent companies working in this area.
