The Coming Divergence of Battery Technology: Mobile vs Stationary
Santa Clara Convention Center, CA, USA
Conference Room B
09:00 - 09:20
Lately, the majority of R&D efforts in battery technologies are directed towards improving the performance of Li-ion batteries to address the relentless needs of the rapidly growing mobile (transportation) sector. However, as the needs of stationary storage market are evolving, the requirements of batteries for mobile and stationary applications are beginning to diverge; this divergence will fuel the innovation in alternative battery technologies.
The focus of the talk is to present diverse requirements of battery storage for both sectors; and discuss alternative battery technologies, such as Zn battery systems, liquid metal and flow batteries for stationary energy storage applications.
Dr. Ashok Saraswat is working as Director, Energy Storage Research at NEC Energy Solutions located in the Boston area in Massachusetts. After obtaining Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Dr. Saraswat began his career in battery systems. He has been involved in R&D, product and process development, assembly processes, life modelling; and battery applications in various market segments including consumer electronics, aerospace and stationary storage. At NEC Energy Solutions his primary responsibility is to scout for and qualify battery technologies for stationary energy storage applications.
NEC Energy Solutions designs, manufactures, and integrates smart energy storage solutions for the electric grid and applications with critical power needs. Its megawatt‐scale energy storage and control systems provide greater stability to the grid while maximizing renewable generation. In telecom, datacenter, and other industrial applications, its high performance lithium-ion battery systems provide better value than traditional lead-acid batteries in tough, critical power applications.
