In the automotive supply chain, 48V has generally been accepted to supplement the 12V level for high power applications. We are pushing forward the limits of 48V controllers into the high-voltage domain, following two paths:
A) With a state-of-the-art SBS high power demonstrator, a complete motor controller comprised of logic, driver, and inverter, covering a power range up to 25 kW.
B) With a novel technology called Power Stack, a compact B6-bridge providing more efficient, more reliable power stages for motor controllers.
We discuss the advantages onto the architecture of automotive systems, which allows to phase out complex high-voltage safety measures.
Dr. Ralph Stömmer received his Ph.D. in Physics, condensed matter. He began his career in 1998 at Bruker AXS GmbH in Karlsruhe. In 2000, he joined Epcos AG in Munich as Product Development Engineer for advanced MEMS/RF-chips. From 2002 to 2009, he was with Infineon AG and the Infineon spin-off Qimonda AG as overall Program Manager, responsible for product development and ramp up of electronic graphics memory chips and consumer chips. With his teams located at 3 sites worldwide, USA, Germany, and China, he received company awards for novel technologies and for quick product ramps. From 2009 to 2010, Dr. Stömmer was the Head of the Department for Mechatronic Systems and Reliability at Fraunhofer IZM, before he assumed his current role in 2010 as Business Development Manager at TT Electronics / AB Mikroelektronik GmbH.
TT Electronics Sensing and Control designs, develops and manufactures world class mechatronic systems for leading global transportation OEMs and Tier 1. Products include sensors, electric motor controllers, power modules and LED lighting technology for passenger cars, HEV and EV, construction and agricultural vehicles, buses, motor cycles and trains.
As part of the TT Electronics Sensing and Control division, AB Mikroelektronik GmbH focusses onto the design, development and series production of electric actuator control units for low-voltage auxiliary aggregates and for high-voltage powertrain and transmission applications in the automotive sector.
