Characteristics of photovoltaic (PV) cells are well known and documented in literature under exposure to natural sunlight. The cell performance depends not only on the luminosity but also on the spectrum, which is not always known for indoor artificial light sources. This uncertainty makes it difficult to predict the behaviour of PV in indoor applications when used for energy harvesting. This leads to selection of inappropriate cell types, making the application lager and more expensive than necessary. Continuous improvements in indoor lighting technology, including rapid advancements in LED and EL wire technology, demand a simple and effective method to determine the performance of PV cells under artificial light sources. In this paper, a solution to this problem is presented, and its effectiveness is demonstrated by benchmarking the performance of both classic silicon substrate and newer DSSC PV cells under mixed spectrum light sources of variable luminosity.

講演者の経歴 (Yannick Verbelen)

Yannick Verbelen graduated with a M.Sc degree in Industrial Engineering Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium (VUB), with a specialization in embedded electronics. His research focuses on the application of renewable energy and energy harvesting technologies to extend the autonomy of electronic devices and to develop new, innovative solutions for existing problems using energy harvesting. He developed the theory for complementary balanced energy harvesting, and currently prepares a PhD on this topic. Other research topics include power electronics and mechatronics. He teaches courses on PCB design, analog and digital electronics and mechatronics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Yannick is responsible for the coordination and development of prototyping technologies for electronics in Fablab Brussels, with an emphasis on PCB manufacturing.
