Industrial IoT systems have unique characteristics compared to IoT deployments in consumer, retail, and other domains. These unique characteristics impact not only the design of Industrial IoT systems, but also the way that return on investment and cost/benefit decisions are made. At the same time, Industrial IoT and Industry 4.0 has shown some of the greatest promise for IoT benefit in terms of increases in machine efficiency, longer life, and lower downtime rates. Ed will discuss how Industrial IoT systems differ in their design due to their environmental and communication differences, and how the whole business model of an industrial IoT system differs from a consumer or retail IoT system. Also he will discuss recent advances in fog based (on-prem) processing and machine learning, and how that can improve machine efficiency and utilization and reduce downtime.
Ed Kuzemchak is the Chief Technology Officer and Director of IoT and Embedded Systems Engineering at Software Design Solutions, which is an Applied Visions company.
Ed founded Software Design Solutions in 2003, focusing the company on embedded systems, machine-to-machine, and IoT software development. He led the growth of the company from inception to its acquisition by Applied Visions in 2016.
Prior to founding Software Design Solutions, Ed was Chief Software Architect for the digital signal processing (DSP) tools group at Texas Instruments and a member of Tartan Laboratories, which developed highly optimized compiler technology for embedded systems.
