The Rise, Fall & Rise Again Of Consumer Smart Glasses
Santa Clara Convention Center, CA, USA
Grand Ballroom E
17:15 - 17:35
Technology's role in our lives is clearly changing. We're spending more and more time with our devices and less in the real world - always worried about missing something, somewhere. If you follow the path we're currently on, the future can seem bleak. Maybe something more like 'Ready Player One,' where we're stuck in our homes, lost in our phones, VR devices, or whatever else is next.
Smart glasses provide an alternative to that future - but not how you might think. They're not tools to distort our worlds. There are no whales jumping out of gymnasium floors, no games, no miscellaneous time wasters. Rather, a focus on small moments that provide connection to the people and important things that matter in our daily lives (i.e. the message from your partner saying your daughter slept poorly last night but is doing better today). The goal is technology that doesn't force the user to compromise between what's in front of them and what they might be missing elsewhere.
In this presentation, Stephen Lake, CEO and co-founder of North, will outline the path to how he and the team at North created Focals, a pair of stylish, everyday smart glasses. He'll touch on where others in this category stumbled and speak to what the future of this category could mean for everyday people - not just for those playing games or working in factories. Lastly, he'll delve into how the coming wave of smart glasses products could forever change our relationship with technology, and vice versa - for better or for worse.
