A basic understanding of science and engineering is helpful to benefit fully from this technical Masterclass. It explains the types of hybrid electric vehicle and the types of pure electric vehicle with pros and cons and explains how they are converging in specification and what that means for batteries and other components such as ultracapacitors and supercabatteries. We look at other key components and the problems and opportunities posed by the way they behave. See how disruptive technologies are going to challenge the legacy thinking that a battery has to be a bulky lump of material with water cooling, because that shape overheats. See how the one big motor is also migrating to electric corner units and even in-wheel motors. Learn why circuit boards loaded with components will be replaced by printed electronics and electrics, including printed lighting and displays and fabric electronics. Question the legacy thinking that a hybrid has to have a conventional gasoline engine when monoblock custom mini ICE engines are leading to monoblock microturbines and learn the pros and cons. There will be a brief coverage of battery choices emerging and charging infrastructure from solar powered recharging stations to in-road inductive power transfer, electric cars becoming part of the super grid and other aspects. Biomimetics - copying nature - tells us to have solar panels opening like origami and the battery should be laminated over the whole vehicle - let us do some brainstorming together!

This technical Masterclass examines the construction and pros and cons of batteries, flywheels, fuel cells, ultracapacitors, supercabatteries and other options, explaining how they work and what comes next. Because lithium batteries are going to be favorites for the next ten years we concentrate particularly on these. However, we do explain the problems of toxic materials, expensive materials and ones subject to price hikes for all popular forms of traction battery. We illustrate how some applications actually benefit from a heavy battery and some do not and we predict the market shares of the different battery technologies across the different types of vehicle. The increasingly popular geometries, chemistries etc are tracked.

Electric vehicles need to be more efficient and self sufficient. Harvesting heat, light, ultra violet, infra red and motion and turning them into electricity are part of this - even using that electricity to make hydrogen to power a traction fuel cell. This Masterclass gives technical explanations and predictions, right down to the options for flexible photovoltaics including transparent versions. Then there are the pros and cons of piezoelectric, magnetostrictive, electrodynamic, thermoelectric and other harvesting including in automotive MEMS. Eliminating wiring will be beneficial and wireless sensors and actuators will be part of this with local energy harvesting to give long life and cost saving. The ultimate wireless sensors form mesh networks like the internet that are self organising and self healing. However, having many nodes act as both tag and interrogator calls for quite a lot of electricity. How is harvesting getting better and electronics becoming more frugal in electricity consumption? What is becoming possible? This masterclass deals with these technical questions and any allied issues raised by the attendees.

Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure and Smart Grid |

Leader Dr Peter Harrop author of the new IDTechEx report "Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure 2011-2021". This session is moderately technical. It covers the global progress with charging standards and installations of charging infrastructure. Solar powered charging stations, inductive charging - resonant and non-resonant - and other energy harvesting and power storage for charging stations are covered as well as battery swapping. The main focus is charging for cars which is by far the biggest market by value. However, charging other vehicles for land, water and air is also covered. Many of these niche markets are less competitive and more profitable for participants with the necessary specialist knowledge. Which wins - ac or dc charging? Slow, moderate or fast charging? Home charging or on the journey? Which companies are in the lead? Will the planned smart grid really take electricity from your car as well as charge it at optimal times and rates?
