    Overview market sizing

IDTechEx forecast the current electric vehicle market to be over $33 billion, with the total market being double that of car market. 29 million EVs were sold in 2010 and this will rise by 69% to 49 million in 2020 but the value of the market will grow by far more because larger and more expensive vehicles and earthmovers are among them. Hybrids will rise from about 50% to about 60% of the value market through the decade. In ten years from now, a far higher percentage of the global output of light industrial vehicles, commercial vehicles and cars will be EVs.

Much of the EV market is now benefiting from the huge wave of government benefits, technical innovation and new models becoming available. Future of Electric Vehicles USA 2010 evaluates those aspects and the market drivers, including what users really need. Batteries, motors and other technology components will be analysed in depth.

China leading role in the industry

China has the largest potential market for electric vehicles. It holds 66% of the EV manufacturers. Over 90% of the world's electric vehicles are made in China, mainly for use in China. It mines and controls 95% of the world's rare earth reserves used in the hybrid car batteries, motors and other key components of today's electric vehicles. Find out what's happening in China and hear who the main players are in the different industry sectors.
