Fraunhofer IZM specializes in industry-oriented applied research. Fraunhofer IZM develops assembly and interconnection technology, also known as electronic packaging. Almost invisible and undervalued by many, electronic packaging is at the heart of every electronic application. Our technologies connect the individual components, protect components and devices from vibration and moisture, and reliably dissipate heat.

Micro Energy Lab

Energy autarkic micro systems and smart sensor nodes will lead to entirely new capabilities and applications in the future. Energy supply and storage is not an added, discrete feature but an integral part of system functionality. Its development requires alliances of developers, manufacturers and end user groups. Micro batteries, portable fuel cells and energy harvesting are key words for this evolution. Fraunhofer IZM addresses these topics together with partners from industry and academia in a number of research projects. Here we use silicon wafer level 3D technology and electronics packaging technologies to integrate and miniaturize power supplies for future electronic products. The department runs a well-equipped battery test laboratory and offers testing and consulting services.

Electronics Condition Monitoring Lab
Durable electronic products have to be readily available and highly reliable. The research group "Condition Monitoring" identifies the parameters that shape reliability and develops strategies that for incorporating them efficiently. With nuanced interpretation of relevant in-field data, the group assesses the condition and remaining lifetime of (power) electronics, mechatronic systems, which in turn not only allows engineers to identify impending system failures, but also to take the necessary preventative measures

PVcomB
PVcomB is a new center for technology transfer in Thin-Film Photovoltaics, founded by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), Technische Universität Berlin, and the University of Applied Sciences Berlin. PVcomB's main goal is to support world-wide growth of thin-film photovoltaic technologies. In a baseline process, two dedicated research-lines produce thin-film PV modules with an area of 30 x 30 cm2 (Si and CIGS).
PVcomB has created a unique PV-cluster in Berlin-Adlershof, supported by many of the important international photovoltaic companies. In 2009, PVcomB was awarded a 15 million b¬ grant from the federal government and the State of Berlin.

SENTECH
SENTECH Instruments develops, manufactures, and sells worldwide advanced quality instrumentation for Plasma Process Technology, Thin Film Measurement, and Photovoltaics.
The medium-sized company founded in 1990 has grown fast over the last decades and has today 60 employees. It is located in Berlin, capital of Germany, and has moved to its own company building in 2010 in order to expand its production facilities.
SENTECH Instruments effectively serves a worldwide customer base and is well established in future technology markets.
