Wireless instruments for the process industry can be powered locally using batteries or various concepts of energy harvesting. We compare different alternatives of external and internal power sources, and demonstrate which new applications may be enabled by energy harvesting. ABB's thermoelectrically powered temperature transmitter and upcoming pressure transmitter will be shown as examples.
