In the rapidly evolving world of IoT and Big Data, companies are constantly pushing the capabilities of our connected devices, leading to one of the primary questions facing IoT today: how does one mitigate power consumption with ever increasing processing demands and sensor data. Often overlooked, these power constraints can have a profound impact on the usability of IoT devices, from increased overhead and logistics to frequent user errors.
We will explore the reasons why moving beyond traditionally charged battery banks can have such a prominent impact on IoT devices, specifically wearable devices, which are incredibly space constrained. We will also discuss how SolePower is starting to make this transition a reality with its self-charging Smartboot.
Alejandro joined SolePower in December of 2016, where he develops the IoT and cloud architecture for the company's self-charging "Smartboot", as well as leads firmware and software development for the product. Prior to SolePower, Alejandro was the CTO and Co-Founder of PieceMaker Technologies, a 3D Printing and Consumer Products company that created the first ever retail system for on-demand, custom 3D printing. Additionally, he has professional experience in R&D, optoelectronic devices, new product development, and sustainable design.
SolePower creates self-charging wearables that capture wasted energy from human motion. SolePower smart work boots ("SmartBoots") collect motion and location data, providing industrial workforces with actionable insights to increase efficiency and reduce accidents. At the core is a patented kinetic charger that generates power every step. SolePower won a Popular Science Invention of the Year award for an energy harvesting insole. The team completed two contracts for the development of energy harvesting footwear in partnership with the US Army. SolePower is based in Pittsburgh, PA.
