Digitalization is attracting all economic segments by opening up new services and disrupting established business models. The transport, medical, payment, security, and industrial fields are among those finding better ways to work and benefiting most. To support these macro-economic trends, a multitude of connected objects are being developed to build new hardware ecosystems. The broad and sustainable adoption of these ecosystems is being fed by user experience, increased efficiency, and greater convenience.
These smart devices are always active and need to operate autonomously. Therefore energy management and the selection of appropriate battery technology are key criteria for broad market acceptance. Designers must pay special attention to autonomy, safety, battery size, and fast and convenient recharge times.
The presentation will cover the challenges of energy and battery management for ultra-low-power connected devices, highlighting the value proposition of EnFilm™, an ST developed Lithium Phosphorus Oxy-Nitride (LiPON)-based rechargeable ultra-thin-film solid-state storage device, with concrete applications and use cases described before an overview of the process and the first automated high-volume pilot line.
