Recently there has been a lot of talk, even excitement, about the use of ammonia as a form of energy storage. With about 200 million tons produced each year, ammonia is the second most produced chemical in the world. Most ammonia is manufactured at large plants and nearly 1,000 - 1,500 tons are produced each day using Haber-Bosch process that was developed more than hundred years ago.
With the global transition from fossil fuels to green energy underway, there is a need for the long-term energy storage and long-range transmission of green energy. Ammonia is a perfect fit for both uses as it is a highly efficient liquid carrier of hydrogen at room temperature and can be readily transported.
Fuel cells that can harness hydrogen made from ammonia can offer significant breakthroughs in overcoming the key challenges of green energy:
• Providing green energy when renewables fall short
Renewable energy technologies are expected to take a leading role in generating sustainable energy, but their weather-dependence makes their availability problematic and the generation of green power inconsistent. Energy from fuel cells can be used to close the gaps as needed.
• Leveraging excess capacity from renewables
Instead of wasting excess capacity from renewables, excess energy could be used to create liquid ammonia for future use by fuel cells. Ammonia is an excellent energy storage platform for fuel cells as it is a very efficient liquid carrier of hydrogen, and can be readily transported. In addition, the use of excess energy from renewals provides a cleaner alternative to the Haber-Bosch process.
• Offering a green, lower cost alternative to diesel
Diesel generators play a major role in providing power in the poor-grid economies of developing countries. The pollution from diesel and other fossil fuels is attributed to the death of 7 million people worldwide each year. Using "green ammonia" as energy carrier could play a role in offering a clean and reliable green energy to the 3.5 billion people who live in off-grid or poor-grid areas.
