Printed Electronics offers an appealing vision of low-cost plastic devices in applications where silicon chips were never imagined before. Item-level identification, smart packaging and brand protection are just a few examples. Such new applications will require a continuous supply of countless disposable devices. While first prototypes are quickly progressing in R&D labs, the vision of sustainable manufacturing chain in not yet evident. In order to enable new applications, PE manufacturers confront a challenge of making innovative products in volumes similar or greater than the global semiconductor industry. This entails significant investments and risks.
In this presentation, Alexander Mityashin will share a different approach to volume manufacturing of printed electronics. This approach enables existing semiconductor industry, more specifically TFT display manufacturers, to leverage their production facilities to make new PE products. Practical introduction of this approach will be supported by concrete examples of PE application pursued in imec's programs in thin-film electronics.
• Latest R&D advances in thin-film electronics (RFID/NFC, microprocessors, sensors, etc.)
• Phased approach to application development: from prototyping to foundry manufacturing
• Leveraging TFT/FPD manufacturing facilities as new foundries for thin-film electronics
• Examples of applications with partner companies
