Consumer wearable technology has advanced to the point where it is accurate enough for some medical purposes and use cases. In some ways consumer wearable technology is actually outpacing medical technology, particularly in the area of optical PPG sensors. With lower costs, better form-factors and new features advanced wearable technology is now enabling ambulatory mobile healthcare delivery, with a focus in prevention, screening, and disease management. For example, wearable devices can now detect atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, as well as provide diagnostics and therapeutics for other conditions including hypertension, asthma/COPD, and other cardiovascular conditions. One point of friction is merging the chaotic exploration and rapid innovation of consumer technologies with the methodical discipline of clinical validation. This session will address these topics and identify how the application of clinical data collection and use case validation to these innovative wearable sensor technologies is advancing both the consumer wearables and medical device markets.
As President and Co-Founder of Valencell, Inc., Dr. LeBoeuf has developed ongoing strategic partnerships between Valencell and leaders in industry and academia. He has raised more than $10M in funding for Valencell and is the inventor/co-inventor of more than 50 patents, including dozens of foundational patents in the field of accurate wearable sensors. Prior to Valencell, LeBoeuf led the optoelectronic biosensor program at GE Global Research, where he managed the development and productization of biosensor systems and developed cutting-edge nanosensor technology. Before joining GE, LeBoeuf developed optoelectronic solid-state materials and devices while researching at North Carolina State University. LeBoeuf holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from N.C. State and a B.S. in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University.
Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, Valencell develops performance biometric sensor technology and licenses this patent-protected technology to consumer electronics manufacturers, mobile device and accessory makers, sports and fitness brands and gaming companies for integration into their products. Valencell's PerformTek® powered sensors are the most accurate wearable biometric sensors that continuously measure heart rate and activity. Valencell has invested years into research and development of its PerformTek sensor technology, protected by dozens of granted patents and independently validated by the Duke Center for Living, North Carolina State University, the Human Performance Laboratory and a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
