Winners of the IDTechEx Energy Harvesting and WSN Awards
On Tuesday the 15th of May in Berlin, Germany, IDTechEx recognised innovation once more with the Energy Harvesting & Storage and Wireless Sensor Networks & RTLS awards, in a ceremony that took place on the first day of the IDTechEx conference on the topic. Over 320 attendees registered for the conference which brought together, for the 4th time in Europe, the community of academics, researchers, technology developers and end-users, each playing their important part in the successful growth of the overall value chain for these emerging technologies.

Best Application of WSN: Libelium |

Winning heaps of praise by the judges for the scale and complexity of its deployment, the winning company was Libelium, a WSN developer in Spain, which managed to develop and deploy a wireless sensor network with up to 1000 sensor nodes, (sensing a variety of gaseous agents as well as parking availability in city streets) which could operate effectively with a lot of different communication protocols.

Best Application of Energy Harvesting: Precision Motors Deutsche Minebea (PMDM) |

The winner in this category was the company Precision Motors Deutsche Minebea (PMDM) in Germany, who, according to Henrik Zessin, "
... managed to develop a prototype of a real world application which can benefit greatly from energy harvesting as the changing of batteries can be avoided".

Best Technical Development of Energy Harvesting: G24 Innovations |

The winner was the company G24 Innovations in Wales, UK. After developing its technology for approximately 6 years, the company have now managed to commercialize its proprietary technology and integrate their Dye Sensitized Cells into applications such as wireless keyboards (in collaboration with Logitech) and autonomously powered rolling blinds, which have been successfully demonstrated in a large deployment in a hotel in Las Vegas.

Best Exhibitor in Show: Algra AE |

Attendees at the conference also had the opportunity to vote for the best exhibition booth and the winner was the company Algra AE in Switzerland, a technology developer of piezoelectric energy harvesters with plenty of interesting demonstrators such as piezoelectric wireless switches and piezo keyboards on display at the conference that captured attendees' attention.

Best Poster: Department of Industrial Sciences and Technology at the Erasmus University College in Brussels |

Finally, in the poster session of the conference, which had more posters than any previous year (16 in total), the winners were Yannick Verbelen and Serge Kubera, representing the Department of Industrial Sciences and Technology at the Erasmus University College in Brussels. Their poster was on the topic of "Ambient Energy Powered Smart Meters."

The IDTechEx Awards recognise company development and success in all energy harvesting technologies and applications including the pertinent Wireless Sensor Networks and Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) fields.
The award ceremony will be held at the gala awards dinner. The awards are hosted by IDTechEx, a leader in providing independent global research and analysis on the development and application of energy harvesting and storage, Wireless Sensor Networks and RTLS.
Any company operating within the energy harvesting and storage and Wireless Sensor Networks and RTLS fields is welcome to apply.

Best Technical Development of an Energy Harvesting Device |
This award will be given to a company which has launched a new product based on energy harvesting (in the last 24 months, Q2 2010 - Q2 2012) and is in the process of bringing it to market. The category will be assessed on the technical development of the product, its potential market, and benefits it brings over alternatives.

Best Application of WSN |
This award is given to the best implementation of WSN. In particular, judges are looking to see the payback from the system, how problems were overcome (if any), and benefits to the user.

Best Application of Energy Harvesting |
This is the award given to an actual commercial success with an end-product using energy harvesting (in the last 24 months, Q2 2010 - Q2 2012). Judges will look for success in terms of products sold and revenues generated.

Best in Show |
This award will be voted for by attendees for who they think is the most impressive company exhibiting at the Energy Harvesting and WSN tradeshow. The award will be presented at the award dinner.

Best Poster Session |
This award will be given to the company and/or academic organisation for the most promising advances in the area of Energy Harvesting or Wireless Sensing Technologies (in the last 24 months, Q2 2010 - Q2 2012). The category will be assessed on the technical development of the work, its potential for market entry, and benefits it brings to the body of work in the given area. All organisations displaying a poster session in the exhibition will be entered for this award. |
