UL - At The Forefront Of Standards Development For Stationary And Motive Batteries

UL has been developing battery standards since the publication of UL 1642 Standard for Lithium Batteries in the early 1970's. Since then, UL has been a leader in standards development addressing the safety of batteries for many different technologies and applications. With the advent of new battery technologies being utilized in ways they had not been used before, UL has taken the lead in developing safety criteria to address the challenges faced in these areas. This is especially true of UL's work in the area of stationary and motive battery safety. As a known leader in safety standard development for batteries and products using batteries, many of UL's battery standards are also referenced in various codes including the NEC, fire and installation codes. This presentation will provide an overview of the UL battery standards for stationary and motive applications and how they are being utilized to address safety challenges in these areas.
Laurie Florence is UL's Principal Engineer for stationary/motive batteries and energy storage systems. She represents UL on a variety of UL standards technical panels including 1973/1989, 1974, 2580/2271, 810/810A/810B, 2267 and 9540/9540A - as well as other industry standards and battery committees across ANSI, SAE, ISO, IEC, IECEE, CSA, and NFPA. Laurie participates on NFPA 855 installation standard for energy storage systems and is a member of the NEC CMP 13 covering the energy storage and storage battery articles. Laurie is also the chair for IEC SC21A (lithium and nickel batteries) and convener of Working Group 5 responsible for developing standards for performance and safety of industrial lithium ion batteries such as IEC 62619, and is a member of IEC TC 120 developing the IEC 62933 series of energy storage system standards. Laurie is also responsible for the certification categories related to these various battery and energy storage standards at UL, and has 28 years of experience at UL in safety certification and standards development.
