Challenges Of Glass-Ceramic Electrolytes As Enablers Of Solid-State Batteries

Solid electrolytes are a key material to enable solid state batteries. Even this kind of batteries gains increasing interest to overcome limitations of existing lithium ion batteries in safety and energy density, a solution with commercial breakthrough is still missing. From the viewpoint of an industrial material development, the main challenges with respect to cell integration and handling within production processes are: (1) An appropriate design of the interface to enable a low resistant Li-ion transport on material level. (2) Allowing Li transport on one side, but hindering undesired side reactions of the material at the other. (3) Stable and cost effective processing routes from raw material and high volume production to recycling. Glass ceramics have the potential to address these challenges.
Dr. Joerg Schuhmacher is a Principal Scientist Powder & Pastes at the Research & Development Center of SCHOTT AG. There he is in charge of establishing and developing the competencies in processing and conditioning of powders as well as their integration into final composite materials. He studied chemistry and took his PhD at the Universitaet Stuttgart. He has nearly twenty years of industrial experience in different development topics starting from manufacture of quartz glass, over functional and decorative, wet chemical coatings, up to glass and glass-ceramic powders for a variety of filler applications, inter alia lithium (ion) batteries.
