There is exciting change and opportunities occurring in the advanced functional materials market. For example, the conductive ink and paste business is a large market but fragmented consisting of many emerging and mature markets. Notable markets are photovoltaics, touch screens, automotive and sensors. Growth will be unevenly spread with several target markets experiencing rapid growth while others decline. There is also now rapid innovation in copper inks and silver alloys, in addition to new sintering processes, fuelled by new applications and changes in existing ones.

Transparent conductive film is another related hot sector. The market growth is fuelled primarily by touch devices, but other applications are also slowly growing in importance. In addition, while CNTs are now taking off in energy storage devices, graphene suppliers are focussing and prioritising new applications. Other materials such as Quantum Dots have created a $500 million market at the device level while new materials are being sought for 3D printing and heat management.
