2D materials are thin, flexible, transparent, robust, and versatile. Yet the traditional substrate for building 2D electronics still largely remains a silicon wafer. Circumventing the silicon infrastructure could offer tremendous cost savings and production scales as well as allow taking full advantage of the 2D materials properties. The Grolltex team has developed and is using a set of technologies that allow synthesis, transfer, patterning, and integration of various 2D materials on flexible plastic substrates towards roll-to-roll fabrication of sensors, transistors, and other electronic materials. This approach in some cases allows to reduce the cost of biosensors by two orders of magnitude while significantly increasing the device yields and production output. A novel chip packaging design for the flexible sensors is also introduced. The roll-to-roll compatible chip packaging based on the "blister-pack", allows packaging the chips in inert atmosphere or be pre-charged with solutions and easily stored.
All classes of electronic materials: conductors, semiconductors, and insulators, are represented on the 2D list and in combination give us the ability to build entire integrated circuits that are only a few atoms thick. Such circuits would not overheat, would be transparent or semi-transparent, could easily be applied to curvilinear surfaces and be virtually unbreakable. Grolltex presents a set of technologies that make this vision one step closer to reality.
Aliaksandr (Alex) Zaretski, PhD, is the co-founder and CTO of GrollTex Inc., a San-Diego based company that is rapidly advancing the commercialization of large-area CVD graphene and other 2D materials. Dr. Zaretski developed a clean, fast, and most importantly, industrially scalable process of patterning and non-destructively transferring 2D materials between substrates. Besides scaling the production of 2D materials, Dr. Zaretski has a number of patents on graphene-based technologies, including sensors for health monitoring, cardiotoxicity, wearables, etc..
Grolltex, short for 'graphene-rolling-technologies', is an advanced materials and equipment company located in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego, California. Our core strength is creating products based in single layer, CVD generated graphene of the highest quality. Through patented transfer and processing methods, we are able to produce single layer graphene at a cost structure not previously known.
