Rare Earth materials are a critical component to the manufacturing of electric vehicles. Unfortunately, they are also in short supply. In 2011 a year long Rare Earth crisis increased costs for these elements up to 1500%. With all major automotive companies announcing big shifts to electric vehicles, can another crisis happen and what is being done to mitigate the potential supply shortage and increased costs. This presentation will address the causes and effects of Rare Earth supply due to government regulations, geo politics, environmental concerns, and market availability.
Dan Vukovich immigrated to the United States from Montenegro at age 18 to attend Purdue University in Indiana. Like so many immigrants, he fell in love with America and decided to make this his home. Upon graduating with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, he started his career designing permanent magnet based motor systems. He became so passionate about potential applications using permanent magnets that he started a company, first distributing magnets and later producing them. Today he continues to manage this company which now produces complex rotor drive systems for electric vehicles. One of the key reasons for his success has been his ability to forecast the supply and demand of critical rare earth materials and channel that information into savings for his customers.
