Hybrid Electrochemical Capacitors In Aqueous Electrolyte Operating At Sub-Ambient Temperatures

Electrochemical capacitors are mainly used for high power outputs and long cycle life. However, it is desirable that they exhibit high energy while simultaneously avoiding to use organic solvents, mainly because of their flammablity and toxic nature. An alternative design of ECs with green aqueous electrolytes effectively solves the environmental and safety issues. In addition, through the hybridization of battery-like and capacitor-like electrodes in aqueous electrolyte, the so-called hybrid electrochemical capacitors with high energy and power performance could reach the electrochemical performance of ECs with acetonitrile-based electrolytes. In this presentation, a solution to critical issue of low temperature performance of aqueous electrochemical capacitor is proposed. We have used choline salts based aqueous electrolyte which enables hybrid capaciotrs to operate down to -40oC.
Speaker Biography (Qamar Abbas)
Dr. Qamar Abbas is a senior researcher and leader of Lise Meitner Project at TU Graz (Austria). He is a specialist in designing new electrodes and electrolytes with over 10 years of experience in fabrication and testing of electrochemical capacitors.
