Optimizing Microgrids With Long-Duration Energy Storage
Santa Clara Convention Center, CA, USA
Conference Room B
09:20 - 09:40
As opportunities for microgrid projects have expanded, there is growing interest in energy storage technologies that can advance and optimize operation of microgrids in both grid-connected and off-grid applications. Developers are seeking storage technologies that can provide the best of both worlds: the long-duration, long-life benefits of pumped hydro - at a levelized cost of energy at or below that of li-ion batteries. As with any technology choice, microgrid developers and project owners are also trying to figure out which long-duration storage applications will provide the greatest return on investment, and best meet the energy needs of each system component. This presentation will explore long-duration use cases (a minimum four hours), evaluate different technologies, and outline some decision factors involved in choosing a long-duration storage resource from those that are available today.
Bill Sproull has been focused on business development for ESS, and its all-iron flow battery energy storage systems, since 2014. Having held executive roles and founded startups in both high tech and emerging clean energy spaces for the last 25 years, Bill's passion centers on bringing disruptive technologies to markets where gaps exist. Prior to ESS, he founded Strategic Energy Advisors, a project development firm focused on solar, storage and energy-efficient lighting for commercial facilities. Bill was a founder and business development executive at ClearEdge Power, building it to become a leader in the stationary fuel cell space. Prior to entering the clean energy industry in 2003, he was an executive at Planar Systems, Inc., responsible for its Industrial Business Unit for custom display solutions. Bill started his career at Honeywell Inc., serving in various roles in sales, marketing, finance and business unit management in its Aerospace Group. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado, with a B.S. degree in Finance.
Established in 2011, ESS Inc. manufactures low-cost, long-duration iron flow batteries for commercial and utility-scale energy storage applications requiring 4+ hours of flexible energy capacity. Our long-duration energy storage platforms, the Energy Warehouse™ (EW) and Energy Center™, use iron, salt, and water for the electrolyte, and deliver an environmentally safe, long-life energy storage solution for the world's renewable energy infrastructure.
Based in Wilsonville, Oregon, ESS Inc. was founded by a team with deep experience in fuel cells, electrochemistry, advanced material science and renewable energy. After five years of intensive innovation, engineering development and rigorous testing and validation, with the backing of ARPA-E and others, the company began shipping turnkey energy storage solutions that allowed companies and municipalities to control their own energy future in 2015.
Our technology delivers environmental and cost advantages. Specifically, our non-corrosive, non-toxic chemistry enables use of off-the-shelf materials. Its non-flammable composition eliminates costly fire suppression systems. Combined with an innovative cell design, our customers benefit from increased power density and reduced O&M cost over our platform's 20+ year lifespan.
In 2017, BASF, the world's leading chemical company, became a significant investor in ESS Inc., joining forces to deliver energy storage solutions for a sustainable future.
With its safe, earth-abundant, proven all-iron flow battery technology, ESS is helping project developers, utilities, and EPCs make the transition to more flexible non-lithium-ion storage that is better suited for the grid and the environment.
