Profile
The Center for Space Human Robotics mission is to study, design and assemble demonstrators for the future generation of materials, processes and components for space human robotics. The development of these basic functions demands several technologies and structural/functional components, sensor/actuator, MEMS and NEMS devices. It also requires compact and flexible energy supply systems, all based on new structural and functional materials with related process technologies that can also be fruitfully used for the development of the next generation of terrestrial robotics systems and several industrial applications.

3D Artificial Pneumatic Muslces

The creation of artificial muscles is a very ambitious goal in the field of robotics, because in nature, muscle tissue has complex characteristics that permit highly versatile movements, from rapid, powerful contractions to small and precise changes in body shape, such as those of human facial expressions. Although individual muscle fibres can only contract, it is their specific arrangement in complex muscle architectures that enables articulate deformations such as bending, twisting and antagonistic movements.

Graphene, Perovskites and Silicon, an Ideal Tandem for Solar Cells

Laws of physics limit the maximum efficiency of silicon solar cells to 32%. For that reason, scientists have spent decades trying to come up with other alternatives, such as III-V and perovskites. However, the latter present several manufacturing challenges, and scaling up the production of solar panels is a key step towards success.

Graphene girders could double the life of lithium batteries

New research has found an effective approach to replacing graphite in the anodes of lithium-ion batteries using silicon, by reinforcing the anode's structure with graphene girders. This could more than double the life of rechargeable lithium-ion based batteries and also increase the capacity delivered by those batteries.
