Orbital Composites

Profile
Orbital Composites has created a new composite materials and 3D printer processes. The printer has a coaxial extruder. It can coat continuous fibers with a thermoplastic sheath. This 3D printed plastic sheath replaces the epoxy that traditionally bonds the fibers together. Carbon or copper fibers may be used to 3D print with. Carbon fibers contribute their extreme strength to the structure. The copper wires provide their conductivity; and the thermoplastic its cohesion and resistivity. With mastery of these 3 elements, 80% of a drone or satellite can be printed in one piece. With the addition of pick and place technology, solar cells and batteries can be integrated into the carbon/copper structure.

A Prototype is Worth a Thousand Meetings

Last week, I spoke at Inside 3D Printing New York City. Inside 3D Printing is a series of 13 annual events around the world organised by Meckler Media in 11 countries. NYC is their flag-ship event and the third one attracted 12,000 pre-registered attendees. It is co-located with 3D Design Week, which showcases products made using 3D printing and includes a fashion show.
