Data Show Benefits of CIRSPR-Edited Gene Therapy in Longer Term
Researchers have presented new data on an investigational therapy for transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia and severe sickle cell disease. The one-time treatment, developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics, showed continued benefits at up to three years after administration, with a safety profile as expected for autologous transplant and potentially much safer than allogeneic transplant (from a donor).

Vertex to install Xerox ElemX3D Metal Printer at Cincinnati Facility
The ElemX leverages Xerox's liquid metal technology that uses cost-effective aluminum wire and is easily deployed, requiring no special facility modifications for operation. Unlike many metal 3D printing technologies, the ElemX requires minimal post-processing and therefore provides a faster time-to-part.

SES
SES, formerly known as SolidEnergy Systems, used to pursue solid-state Li-Metal technology. SolidEnergy was a spin out from MIT founded in 2012 by Dr. Qichao Hu. It was incubated at A123 in its early years. In 2015, Dr Hu realized that all solid-state batteries look good on paper but have fundamental difficulties in real cell production. Then in 2018, the company changed its name to SES after restructuring, addressing its focus on hybrid approach with high-concentration solvent-in-salt liquid electrolyte, solid-state protection coating for Li-Metal anode and AI software to monitor the battery health. The hybrid approach also has a more practical mass manufacturing capability.

Hastelloy-X Superalloy 3D-Printed on a VELO3D Metal Additive Solution
Vertex Manufacturing has purchased a second end-to-end additive manufacturing solution from VELO3D Inc.—this time dedicated to the superalloy Hastelloy-X. Vertex is the first contract manufacturer to own a VELO3D system that processes this high-performance material. The company acquired a VELO3D solution for Inconel 718 alloy, in June.
