Presentation Summary

Graphene and other 2D materials (GRMs) have opened new possibilities for energy conversion devices varying from large scale photovoltaics (PVs) and fuel cells (FCs) with extended lifetime, to efficient RF energy harvesters, piezoelectric and thermoelectric generators in the microscale. In this talk, conventional properties as well as new opportunities afforded by the 2D-nature of GRMs for energy conversion will be presented giving the prospect for direct device realization and corresponding commercialization potential in the emerging technologies of self-powered sensor IoT networks, wearables and large-scale energy conversion installments, such as PV parks and FCs stacks.

Speaker Biography (Emmanuel Kymakis)

Emmanuel Kymakis is a Full Professor at the ECE Dept. of the Hellenic Mediterranean University and director of the Center of Materials Technology & Photonics. He received the B.Eng. (First Class Honours) degree in Electrical Engineering & Electronics from Liverpool University in 1999 and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Cambridge University in 2003. His research is focused on the realization of advanced materials and solution processable optoelectronic and energy devices for emerging technologies and applications. In recent years, his research focussed on graphene and related 2D materials interfacial engineering of perovskite and organic solar cells for improved performance and stability, and on performance evaluation of PV systems in outdoor conditions. He has >100 SCI publications and > 7.000 citations with an h-index of 42. He has served as a member of the founding GA of the Hellenic Foundation for Research & Innovation (HFRI). He is currently the leader of the Energy Generation WP of the FET-Flagship Initiative Graphene, a member of the Engineering sectoral scientific council of the National Council for Research & Innovation of Greece (NCRI) and member of the Engineering thematic advisory council of HFRI.
