Moon and Mars Superoxides for Oxygen Farming
The dusty faces of the Moon and Mars conceal unseen hazards for future explorers. Areas of highly oxidising material could be sufficiently reactive that they would produce chemical burns on astronauts' unprotected skin or lungs. Taking inspiration from a pioneering search for Martian life, a Greek team is developing a device to detect these 'reactive oxygen species' - as well as harvest sufficient oxygen from them to keep astronauts breathing indefinitely.

Parker Solar Probe Captures its First Images of Venus' Surface
NASA's Parker Solar Probe has taken its first visible light images of the surface of Venus from space. Smothered in thick clouds, Venus' surface is usually shrouded from sight. But in two recent flybys of the planet, Parker used its Wide-Field Imager, or WISPR, to image the entire nightside in wavelengths of the visible spectrum - the type of light that the human eye can see - and extending into the near-infrared.1 Feb 2022

Perseverance Rover Collects First Mars Rock Sample
NASA's Perseverance rover has completed the collection of the first sample of Martian rock, a core from Jezero Crater slightly thicker than a pencil. Mission controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory received data that confirmed the historic milestone.
